Pidcock withdraws after confirming damage to his knee and ligaments

The Volta a Catalunya loses one of its most high-profile names just 24 hours after the queen stage. Tom Pidcock did not start after the consequences of the hard fall suffered during the descent the previous day and has decided to abandon the race to focus on his recovery.

The British rider, who managed to finish the stage after such a spectacular yet concerning accident, woke up with a very swollen knee, which ultimately influenced a decision that points directly to caution. Subsequent medical tests have confirmed that the impact was more serious than it initially appeared, affecting the area of the tibia and fibula, as well as several ligament injuries in the knee.

In a video message, Pidcock himself explained what happened and the reason for his withdrawal. He acknowledged that he would not start the next day because his knee was very swollen and that there were internal damages that would need time to heal. He also pointed out that after the fall he barely felt his knee at first, as the impact was more concentrated on the upper body and wrist, which allowed him to complete the stage without being fully aware of the extent of the injury.

The British rider admitted that he had reached the finish line with the intention of keeping the possibility of continuing in the race open, but that the evolution during the night was decisive. He explained that the knee showed significant swelling and that continuing to compete was not part of his plans, despite being in good shape and hoping to be a protagonist in the outcome of the Volta.

Pidcock accepted the situation with resignation, stating that now his priority is to recover as soon as possible and positively assessing that he avoided more serious consequences. He even joked that the most frustrating thing about the accident is that it wasn't recorded on video, in a further demonstration of the tone with which he wanted to downplay the drama of a fall that, however, prematurely ends his participation in the Catalan race.
