Maxxis is making a strong bet on 32 inches with a new range that goes from gravel to MTB

The development of 32-inch wheels has ceased to be a technical curiosity and is starting to take shape as a real platform. Until now, the main brake was the lack of tires, and Maxxis has decided to directly tackle that problem with a double offensive. On one hand, it expands its catalog to practically cover the entire spectrum of MTB. On the other, it introduces a new model that redefines the midpoint between pure XC and light trail.

Maxxis accelerates the arrival of 32” wheels with a complete range and a new, more aggressive Aspen AT

The new Aspen AT is born as a clear evolution within one of the most recognizable families of cross country. And this version comes with a reinterpretation of the tread to respond to how current XC has changed, becoming increasingly technical and demanding.

The redesign particularly affects the central band. Where there were previously low knobs aimed at maximizing speed, now there are taller and more defined blocks, with a more progressive transition towards the sides. The goal is to maintain rolling efficiency while adding traction capability on loose, wet, or broken terrain.

This balance places the Aspen AT in new territory. It remains a fast tire, but is no longer limited to the track or classic XC. It opens up to uses such as marathon, downcountry, and even light trail routes, especially in modern configurations with greater travel.

In terms of construction, it maintains a light 120 TPI casing with EXO protection and E50 certification for e-bikes. It is only offered in 2.4” width, both in 29” and 32”, making it clear that it is designed for current and performance-oriented setups.

Five tires to give real meaning to the 32” format

The most important movement is not just the launch of the Aspen AT, but the context in which it arrives. Maxxis goes from having a single option in 32 inches to offering a complete range with five differentiated models.

The structure is organized quite logically according to use and terrain:

  • Aspen ST as the most rolling option, designed for hard surfaces and even gravel
  • Aspen as a versatile XC tire
  • Aspen AT as an alternative for looser or more technical conditions
  • Forekaster as a step towards downcountry and light trail
  • Dissector as an option clearly aimed at more aggressive terrains

This range completely changes the scenario. Until now, trying a 32” bike meant accepting obvious compromises in behavior. With this range, for the first time, performance can be adjusted based on terrain, just as it happens with 29”.

The expansion does not stop at XC. The arrival of models like Forekaster and Dissector in 32 inches indicates that Maxxis does not see this format as something exclusive to competition.

The Forekaster positions itself at that intermediate point that today defines many downcountry bikes, with an open tread and supporting side knobs that seek to maintain speed without losing control. Above, the Dissector introduces a more aggressive pattern and more robust casings, designed for clearly trail use.

However, these two models are still not available. Their arrival is expected in the third quarter of 2026, suggesting that the market for compatible bikes will continue to grow in parallel.

A new MaxxTerra compound aimed at durability

Alongside this expansion, Maxxis introduces an important evolution in one of its most widespread compounds. The new MaxxTerra abandons the previous configuration and is rethought as a unique optimized compound.

The data provided by the brand is clear:

  • 15 percent increase in grip
  • Approximately 30 percent improvement in durability
  • No penalty in rolling resistance

This change is particularly relevant because it affects a large part of the trail and gravity range. Models like Rekon, Forekaster, Dissector, or Minion will gradually incorporate it, which can have a direct impact on cost per use and the overall behavior of the tires.

Maxxis's move does not confirm that 32” will replace 29”, but it does eliminate the main argument against it that existed until now. Without tires, there was no platform. With a complete range, the scenario changes completely.
