Matteo Jorgenson repeats victory in Paris-Nice

The planned route of Visma-Lease a Bike seemed to twist with the abandonment of Jonas Vingegaard, but the Dutch team had a prodigious Matteo Jorgenson in reserve who validated the dominance throughout the entire Paris-Nice of his team.

Last year's success was no coincidence. Matteo Jorgenson confirms his quality by winning his second Paris-Nice

A week marked by the weather in a 2025 Paris-Nice that truly lived up to its nickname of the race to the sun, with a final stage in the mountains around Nice where the sun king made an appearance to honor the triumph of Matteo Jorgenson, who unlike last year, when he struggled to defend the yellow jersey, this time did not want to speculate and applied the maxim of "the best defense is a good offense."

Many things happened before reaching this decisive stage in a Paris-Nice that started with Visma-Lease a Bike as the team to beat and Jonas Vingegaard as the main favorite for victory. A start marked by two practically flat stages where Tim Merlier proved to be the best sprinter of the race, winning both with total ease.

An anticipation of the first decisive stage of the race with the team time trial, with the usual format where each rider sets their time and it is not necessary to reach a minimum to count the team's time. A day where Visma-Lease a Bike left no room for doubt, winning the stage with a 14-second difference over Jayco-AlUla. Interestingly, the yellow jersey was to fall on the, ultimately, winner of the race Matteo Jorgenson.

The first mountain finish came the next day in a stage that was marked by a neutralization at 40 kilometers due to intense hail and complaints from some cyclists, including Jonas Vingegaard himself, about the resumption of the race when they requested it to be suspended due to the intense cold which, along with the rain, made the day very demanding. It was not to be, and in the finale at La Loge des Gardes, a situation we had already seen a few weeks ago in Volta ao Algarve was repeated, with an explosive Joao Almeida being able to beat the Dane at the finish line. However, the yellow jersey stayed at home and passed to Jonas Vingegaard after Jorgenson lost a few seconds in the final acceleration.

Everything seemed to be going according to plan for Jonas Vingegaard until, at the start of the fifth stage, he fell, suffering damage to his hand and hitting his face. Added to another tough day in terms of weather, the image of Vingegaard's suffering throughout the entire stage was harrowing. Vingegaard managed to reach the finish line but was unable to keep up with the pace on the final climb to Cote Saint Andre, where Matteo Jorgenson had to defend the interests of Visma-Lease a Bike, holding his own throughout the ascent but unable to clinch the partial victory as he was beaten by the diminutive Lenny Martinez and by a Clement Champoussin who continues to accumulate good points for XDS-Astana.

In any case, Jorgenson regained the lead of the race, which he would not relinquish until the end on the Promenade des Anglais in Nice, a few days later. Before that, and already knowing that the queen stage scheduled for Saturday with the ascent of La Colmiane and finish in Auron had been shortened, eliminating the first climb, due to the complicated weather forecasts that even predicted snow.

The sixth day dawned with the announcement of Jonas Vingegaard's abandonment. It was then that Visma-Lease a Bike sought an alternative to finish the race without having to reach the last day with the struggles of the previous year. Midway through the stage, in a crosswind section, they staged a real melee, in which they found the collaboration of a huge INEOS Grenadiers that joined the common interest to blow up the race.

An stage that would end up in the hands of a Mads Pedersen who presents his credentials for Milan-San Remo, and in which the big loser would be Joao Almeida, who lost almost two minutes, sending him to 2'40'' in the general classification. The only ones capable of threatening Jorgenson's lead were Lipowitz at 40 seconds and Skjelmose at 59.

Thus, we arrived at the anticlimactic queen stage that left us, halfway through, with Skjelmose's abandonment after a hard fall colliding with a traffic island. Otherwise, the final climb only left us with the battle for the stage victory, which was claimed by the members of the day's breakaway, with Michael Storer coming out on top. With no changes among the favorites, the situation looked very favorable heading into the short final stage, where Matteo Jorgenson did not want to speculate and attacked the other favorites but could not win the stage, which went to Magnus Sheffield.
