Marc Soler gives UAE Team Emirates-XRG the seventh victory in La Vuelta 2025

The breakaway triumphed again in stage 14 of La Vuelta, the second in Asturian territory with a finish in another of the routes that are becoming classics, such as the linking of the Puerto de San Lorenzo and La Farrapona. Marc Soler started from the beginning of the final climb and managed to culminate a fantastic exhibition on another day without differences among the favorites.

Jonas Vingegaard saves another mountain stage without differences and is one step closer to winning La Vuelta

After yesterday's tough stage towards Angliru, La Vuelta opted for a short stage today, just 135 kilometers, between Avilés and the summit of La Farrapona. In between, the climb of Tenebredo and a basic one when arriving in Somiedo, such as the tough Puerto de San Lorenzo.

The stage started with timid attacks, with no one willing to spend too much to get into the breakaway, so it took about 20 kilometers for it to consolidate. The breakaway was once again numerous, with 25 cyclists among whom UAE Team Emirates-XRG had Marc Soler and Mikkel Bjerg, which could anticipate a tactical move by the Emirati squad trying to put pressure on Jonas Vingegaard.

Visma-Lease a Bike also included Victor Campenaerts in the breakaway, although he suffered an untimely puncture when the team cars had not yet been allowed to pass, forcing him to take a bike from the neutral car, which was not his size, and finally hold on until his assistance arrived. However, the Belgian has plenty of power and would manage to get back in front to balance the tactical situation with his closest rivals.

The race entered a waiting mode until the arrival of the Puerto de San Lorenzo, where the breakaway was being selected due to the sheer toughness of the slopes of this ascent. The paradigm also changed in the peloton, where it was UAE Team Emirates-XRG that began to set the pace and made us fantasize about a distant move for the general classification from the very slopes of this climb.

Even the unruly Juan Ayuso put on his working overalls today, making the first major selection in the main group, but without his leader deciding to launch an offensive. Thus ended a climb that left us somewhat puzzled. Perhaps Joao Almeida did not have the best sensations in his legs and did not dare to launch an attack.

In fact, Marc Soler, who had remained hidden in the breakaway, just at the start of La Farrapona, attacked with a lot of strength. An attack with a clear intention to go for the victory in this fourteenth stage of La Vuelta. Only the very young Norwegian from Decathlon-AG2R La Mondiale, Johannes Staune-Mittet, could respond to his attack, although on one of the tough ramps that dot the initial part of the climb, Soler dropped him mercilessly.

Behind, UAE Team Emirates-XRG maintained a high pace but, judging by the number of cyclists remaining in the main group, not a pace aimed at causing real damage. Vingegaard kept up with 3 men, plus Campenaerts who would arrive from the breakaway a little later and manage to hold his own for a good couple of kilometers in the group, another sign that the pace was not really high.

As we said before, perhaps because Joao Almeida did not have the same legs today as he enjoyed yesterday on Angliru, perhaps out of respect for Marc Soler's breakaway and preferring to ensure a new partial victory that brings them closer to the challenge they have set of totaling 100 wins in a season. To this, we would have to add the strong headwind that was hitting the last kilometers of the ascent, which also served to discourage any attack.

The truth is that, once again, we had a mountain stage without movements among the favorites. Only Giulio Pellizzari increased the pace with the last kilometer in sight for the attack of Jai Hindley, to which Almeida and Vingegaard responded perfectly.

With Marc Soler already raising his arms to celebrate his victory, Joao Almeida started to try to take the bonus of second place, although he was overtaken at the last moment by the Dane, who thus recovered the two seconds of difference that the Portuguese imposed on him yesterday.
