Jonas Vingegaard has been declared the winner of the 2025 Vuelta a España after an unusual final stage in Madrid, which was neutralized and ultimately canceled due to pro-Palestinian protests that interrupted the passage of the peloton. The Danish rider now adds his third grand tour victory, after two wins in the Tour de France, but the celebration was overshadowed by the incidents that forced the race to be stopped.
Jonas Vingegaard wins the 2025 Vuelta a España
Jonas Vingegaard lifted his first winner's trophy of the Vuelta a España this Sunday in Madrid, although he did so in exceptional and uncomfortable circumstances, as the final stage was not contested due to protests that blocked the urban circuit of the capital. The rider from Visma-Lease a Bike, who had already secured the overall victory with his devastating attack on the Bola del Mundo, now claims his third grand tour victory after his two wins in the Tour de France.
What was supposed to be the traditional closing celebration of the Spanish tour turned into a tense day, marked by an unprecedented security deployment. From the start, it was clear that it would not be a normal day, the route was shortened, control measures were heightened, and up to 2,000 officers were mobilized in anticipation of incidents.

The warnings were confirmed 58 kilometers from the finish line, when a group of protesters managed to interrupt the passage of the peloton in the middle of the Madrid circuit. The cyclists were forced to stop, and after several minutes of debate between riders, organizers, and officials, it was decided not to continue. Vingegaard's gesture of shaking hands with his teammates amidst the confusion signaled the end of the Vuelta in an unusual way.
The protest, linked to the participation of the Israel-Premier Tech team in the context of the ongoing conflict in Gaza, had already affected several previous stages. On this occasion, with hundreds of people invading the road at different points along the route, it was impossible to guarantee the safety of the peloton.
In terms of sports, the script was written the day before as Vingegaard soared in the grueling final ascent to the Bola del Mundo to secure his leadership, while João Almeida (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) solidified the second place and Tom Pidcock (Q36.5) achieved his first podium in a grand tour of his career.
The 2025 Vuelta will go down in history for the dominance of the Danish cyclist, but also for a celebration marked by public protests against the participation of a cycling team representing Israel.
