Demi Vollering wins the European Championship with a devastating attack 37 km from the finish line
The Dutch Demi Vollering claimed the European title in road cycling 2025 this Saturday with an impeccable performance. The Dutch champion won solo after launching a devastating attack 37 kilometers from the finish line, in the decisive stretch between Privas and Guilherand-Granges, to secure her first European champion jersey.

The elite women's race at the European Championships, held over 116.1 kilometers with a classic profile route, including the climbs of Col du Moulin à Vent, Côte de Saint-Romain-de-Lerps, and the demanding Côte de Val d'Enfer, was decided in pure Pogacar style: with a distant and impossible to respond attack.
The winner of the Tour de France 2024 achieved a memorable victory with a solo attack 37 kilometers from the finish line, allowing her to arrive with a 1:18 advantage over Kasia Niewiadoma (Poland), while her compatriot Anna van der Breggen completed the podium with the bronze.
The race was decided on the key climb to Côte de Saint-Romain-de-Lerps, a 7 km climb with an average gradient of 7.2%. There, with a reduced group of only 18 riders, the Netherlands had six representatives, including Vollering, Van der Breggen, Van Anrooij, Bredewold, and Rooijakkers, which allowed them to control the race with authority.

The first moves came in the initial phase, with a breakaway led by Christina Bragh Lorenzen (Denmark), Carina Schrempf (Austria), and Nora Jencusova (Slovakia), which at one point had a little over a minute advantage. However, the breakaway dissolved on the Côte de Val d'Enfer, 59 kilometers from the finish line. From there, attacks continued unsuccessfully until Vollering decided to break the race.
The Dutch rider accelerated just before the top of Saint-Romain-de-Lerps, selecting the group of favorites and taking Van der Breggen, Longo Borghini, and Niewiadoma with her. But as soon as she changed the pace for the second time, no one could follow her. Longo Borghini gave up first; Niewiadoma and Van der Breggen tried to organize in the chase, but the Dutch rider was already flying towards her first European jersey.
"I am very proud to bring this jersey home for the Dutch team because today we raced perfectly together. I felt very good and wanted to try to attack early. All the time trial training I did for the World Championships was still in my legs, and I knew I could do it alone until the end," explained the champion after the finish.
With this victory, Vollering achieves her first European title and returns the Netherlands to the top of women's cycling in Europe, adding another gold medal to her impressive record and proving that she remains one of the most dominant riders in the world peloton.
The best Spanish rider was Mavi García, who once again showed her consistency in major events by finishing seventh, confirming her excellent form after the World Championship bronze.
