An avalanche of fines for cyclists forces the Local Police to request support from the Civil Guard
A Sunday morning has been enough for Llíber to become the latest focal point of controversy between cyclists and traffic. Dozens of cyclists, many of them training in the area, were fined 100 euros for riding against traffic on several streets in the urban area, taking advantage of a detour misinterpreted due to the closure of the main thoroughfare.
Chain Fines for Cyclists in Llíber: Lines of Up to 30 Sanctioned for Riding in Prohibited Direction
As reported by Levante-EMV, the Local Police were overwhelmed by the situation and had to request reinforcement from the Civil Guard, resulting in lines of up to 30 cyclists waiting to be sanctioned at the exit of the municipality.
The trigger was the closure of the urban thoroughfare due to the celebration of a Christmas market, which forced traffic to be diverted through the outer paths between vineyards. However, dozens of cyclists (and some motorcyclists) chose to cross the town through narrow alleys, ignoring up to three consecutive signs indicating a prohibited direction.
According to the account of the officers themselves, the pattern was repeated: the first one passed and the rest followed, unaware that they were chaining several infractions. The result was an administrative fine of 100 euros (reduced amount for early payment) for all those intercepted.
